Project: Omni-Directional Wind- and Water-Tolerant
Inlet for the Dry Filter Unit
Overview of R&D project for the Department of Defense:
- Design an inlet incorporating an aerodynamic lens array
aerosol concentrator
- Demonstrate tolerance to rain and salt spray through
laboratory testing
- Develop a low-cost manufacturing method for mass-producing
the inlet
- Design, fabricate and test low-cost prototypes in wind
tunnels
- Design a commercial prototype
Benefits of this technology include:
- Efficient performance: sampling of 1- to 10-micron
particles in 30 mph cross winds; effective rejection of
rain, salt spray and particles bigger than 20 microns
- Minimal cost of ownership: low initial cost, disposable
concentrator elements; use of integral high-efficiency
aerosol concentrator will reduce DFU power draw by 50 to 70%
- Optimal system characteristics: lightweight, no moving
parts and resistant to fouling and corrosion
Applications of this technology include:
- Military
- Civilian security
- Environmental monitoring
