Project: Micro-capillary collector that allows aerosol delivery to microliter or nanoliter droplets

Overview of R&D for the Department of Homeland Security and National Institutes of Health:
  • Develop technology that enables aerosol delivery to microliter or nanoliter droplets
  • Use of concentrator reduces flow rate sufficiently to allow concentrated aerosol stream to flow through micro-capillary
  • Tight bends in capillary cause particles to impact on inner walls of capillary
Benefits of this technology include:
  • High-volume sampling of aerosol particles with delivery to small liquid volumes for liquid-based assays
  • Rapid acquisition of high-concentration samples
  • Ability to elute particles from capillary wall using very small (nanoliter to microliter) droplets
  • 100% collection in capillary for particles 1 micron in diameter or larger
  • Ability to readily achieve a concentration factor of 109
Applications of this technology include delivery of aerosol particles to liquid-based arrays for:
  • Military
  • Civilian security
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Personal exposure monitoring
  • Medical diagnostics
  • Other biomedical applications
